NuvaRing Strokes
NuvaRing Blood Clot
NuvaRing stroke and NuvaRing blood clot side effects have been reported by women using this relatively new form of birth control. Strokes and blood clots are being linked to third-generation contraceptives containing desogestrel. Given the increased risk of thromboembolotic side effects there are questions whether patients were adequately warned about the potential risks and complications associated with NuvaRing.
NuvaRing Strokes and Heart Attacks
Combination hormonal contraceptives like NuvaRing can increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks. According to Public Citizen around 30 blood clots per 100,000 occur in women using third-generation contraceptives. This is compared to 15 blood clots per 100,000 women using second-generation birth control. Combination oral contraceptives contain synthetic versions of estrogen and progestins. The difference between second and third-generations oral contraceptives is the progestin. All third-generation oral contraceptives in the United States contain desogestrel.
One of the serious risks with NuvaRing and other third-generation contraceptives is the increased chance of developing a blood clot which can lead to a stroke or heart attack. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that brings oxygen to the brain bursts or is clogged by a blood clot. There are two main types of strokes: ischemic stroke (caused by blockage) and hemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding).
Ischemic Strokes
A serious problem with NuvaRing and other third-generation contraceptive is the increased risk of suffering an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes occur when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in the body and then subsequently breaks off and travels through the bloodstream. The blood clot can then lodge in the brain, lungs, heart or other areas. When the blood clot stops the flow of blood to the heart or brain a stroke or heart attack can follow. Around 80% of all strokes are ischemic.
