A growing number of women have been reporting a problem with Nuvaring and blood clots. More than a dozen studies indicate that third generation birth control containing desogestrel were linked with blood clots in women compared to older versions of birth control which contained different forms of progestin.
Nuvaring is a combination hormonal contraceptive which uses the hormones estrogen and etonogestrel which is a form of the progestin desogestrel. The hormones in Nuva ring may cause changes in the way your blood clotting system functions allowing blood clots to more easily form. If blood clots form in your legs, they can later travel to the lungs and cause a sudden blockage of a vessel carrying blood to the lungs. The risk of developing a pulmonary embolism increases.
The following video medical update from insidermedicine covers a recent blood clot study that found people who had experienced a blood clot were 5% more likely to develop a second blood clot in their lung and 20% more likely to develop a second blood clot in their leg during a three year period.
